New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi met top BJP leaders including party president Amit Shah on Sunday to discuss recent political developments and the upcoming budget session of parliament, party sources said.

The meeting, held at the residence of prime minister, came amid several opposition parties uniting against the government over police action at the Jawaharlal Nehru University. The sources said that union ministers Rajnath Singh, Arun Jaitley and Sushma Swaraj also attended the meeting but stressed it was not concerning JNU.

They said the party leaders discussed forthcoming assembly polls to four major states and the budget session of parliament which begins February 23.

Some students organised a meet on the JNU campus on the night of February 9 to mourn the hanging of parliament attack convict Afzal Guru and Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front co-founder Maqbool Bhat. Anti-India slogans were allegedly raised at the gathering. Delhi Police registered a sedition case on Thursday and arrested NUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar.

The Congress, CPI-M, CPI and JD-U on Saturday protested against the arrest. The issue of police action at JNU is also expected to be raised by the opposition during the budget session. (IANS)
