Vrindavan, March 29 (IANS) Union Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi on Tuesday laid the foundation stone for a new 1,000-bed widows' home slated to come up on 3.52 acres at a cost of Rs.54.49 crore.
UP Minister of State for Women's Welfare Syeda Shadaab Fatima said the state and the central government are jointly working on this unique project which will serve the widows and provide them basic amenities.
A spokesperson of the National Buildings Construction Corporation said the project would be completed by October 2017. Part of the 'Swadhar Grah Scheme', aming to provide food, clothing and shelter to distressed women, the new home will have three floors with facilities like ramps, lifts, running water and other specific amenities required by senior citizens.
There are already three widows homes catering to around 2,000 women. Sulabh International is providing support to run the homes. (IANS)
