The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill was introduced amid din in the Lok Sabha today. The Bill makes all declarations of instant triple talaq void and illegal. It seeks to make the practice a punishable offence with imprisonment of up to three years.
The Bill will replace the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Ordinance-2018. Moving the bill, Law and Justice Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said the government came up with the bill as the practice of triple talaq continued despite the Supreme Court’s direction against it.
He said the legislation has taken into consideration the interests of Muslim women. He rejected the objections made by Congress member Shashi Tharoor terming them baseless. Mr. Tharoor had opposed the bill saying it has a criminal provision which is not right. He also described the bill as mischievous. (AIR NEWS)
