With all the Lok Sabha results out, the BJP has won 303 seats surpassing its previous record of 282 in 2014. This is the first time that a non-Congress government will take over at the centre for a second term. Elections were held in 542 constituencies.
The election to Vellore parliamentary constituency was cancelled by the Election Commission on allegations of money power. The Congress could hardly improve its tally of 44 in the previous Lok Sabha and secured 52 seats this time. The Congress could not even get the number of seats required for Leader of Opposition status in the Lok Sabha.
The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance wins 351 seats as against their previous tally of 336. The UPA gets 90 seats. BJP made a clean sweep in Gujarat, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Arunachal Pradesh and Delhi. In Rajasthan, of the 25 seats, BJP got 24 and its ally party one.
The DMK gets third positions winning 23 seats followed by Trinamool Congress and YSR Congress 22 each. The Shiv Sena bagged 18 seats and Janata Dal(United) 16. Left parties CPI and CPI-M have been decimated and are left with only five seats -- three for the CPI-M and two for CPI. This is half of their tally of 10 in 2014 elections.
As many as 15 parties have sent just one MP to the 17th Lok Sabha. Among them are Aam Admi party, AIADMK, Janata Dal(S) and JMM. In the 2014 elections, 6 parties had sent single MP to the Lok Sabha.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has won from Varanasi by over 4 lakh 79 thousand votes. He has surpassed his previous margin of 3 lakh 71 thousand seven hundred and 84 votes in 2014 parliamentary elections. He defeated SP-BSP-RLD alliance candidate Shalini Yadav who secured one lakh 95 thousand votes. The Congress candidate Ajay Rai was relegated to the third position.
BJP President Amit Shah has been elected from Gandhinagar with a huge margin of over 5 lakh 57 thousand votes. UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi retained Rai Bareilly seat while Congress President Rahul Gandhi lost Amethi to Union Minister Smriti Irani by a margin of over 55,000 votes.
In Uttar Pradesh, the BJP wave continues in the state. The party has won 62 seats with a vote share of 49.56 per cent. The Congress with only one seat could get only 6.31 per cent of the votes in the state - a drop from 7.53 per cent last general elections. BSP which had no seat in the last Lok Sabha got 10 this time, with its vote share of 19.26 per cent.
Its ally, Samajwadi Party repeated its performance winning 5 seats but its vote share has dropped to 17.96 per cent from 22.35 per cent in 2014. Less than one per cent voters opted for NOTA in UP this election. The BJP will send nine women members to the Lok Sabha this time from Uttar Pradesh.
Prominent among them are Smriti Irani, Dr Rita Bahuguna Joshi, actor Hema Malini and Maneka Gandhi. NDA ally Apna Dal (S) also sends another woman member Anupriya Patel to the Lok Sabha
In Odisha, Out of 21 Lok Sabha constituencies in the state, BJD has bagged 12 seats followed by BJP 8 and Congress one. 174 candidates were in the fray, of which 125 lost their deposits.
In Gujarat, the BJP has made a clean sweep and won all the 26 Lok Sabha seats repeating its performance of 2014.
The BJP got a vote share of over 62 per cent, 3 per cent more than its share in the last Lok Sabha elections. Congress failed to open its account in the state. Congress' vote share declined marginally by 0.8 per cent, from 32.9 per cent in 2014 to 32.1 in 2019. BJP won four seats - Gandhinagar, Navsari, Surat and Vadodara by a margin of over 5 Lakh votes this time as compared to three in the last elections.
In Tamil Nadu, DMK-led UPA has wrested 37 of 38 seats from the AIADMK. State ruling party AIADMK retained only the Theni seat. In one of the biggest ever assembly bye-elections in the state, AIADMK bagged nine seats, whereas DMK won in 13. DMK’s strength in the Assembly has now gone up to 110 while the ruling AIADMK has increased its tally to maintain a comfortable majority on the floor of the house.
In Andhra Pradesh, YSR Congress has made a clean sweep, winning 22 out of 25 parliamentary seats. Telugu Desam Party (TDP) has won only 3 seats Guntur, Srikakulam and Vijayawada. Only 54 of 329 candidates could save their deposits while 275 lost. In almost all constituencies, top two candidates shared among themselves the 80 percent of the votes cast.
BJP has swept Madhya Pradesh also winning 28 seats while Congress could get only one in Chhindwada. BJP grabbed 58 per cent of votes while Congress received 34.5 percent. BJP won Hoshangabad, Indore and Vidisha parliamentary constituencies by over 5 lakh votes.
In Uttarakhand, the BJP retained all 5 seats.
The BJP's vote share improved from 55.93 per cent votes in 2014 to 61.01 per cent in 2019. Congress came in second position with 31.40 per cent. Just over one per cent voters polled NOTA this time.
In Delhi, the BJP made a clean sweep winning all seven seats with massive margins as all its candidates bagged more than 50 per cent of votes, while the Congress for the first time in five years faired better than the ruling AAP which is delegated to the third spot. The contest was triangular among the BJP, Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party.
The BJP has received 56.56 per cent of votes, more than the combined vote share of the Congress 22.51 per cent and the AAP 18.11 per cent. The BJP had bagged 46.4 per cent votes in 2014. Over 45 thousand voters chose the NOTA option, an increase of over six thousand as compared to 2014 general elections.
In Jammu and Kashmir, National Conference and BJP have won three seats each. In Baramulla constituency, National Conference leader Mohd. Akbar Lone has defeated Peoples Conference candidate Raja Aijaz Ali by a margin of over 30,000 votes.
In Punjab, Congress has won eight seats out of 13 in the state. BJP and the Shiromani Akali Dal shared two each while Aam Aadmi Party got one. Punjab witnessed triangular contest in most of the seats. Amritsar, Firozpur and Gurdaspur saw the direct contest between NDA and Congress while the fight in Sangrur was between AAP and Congress. All other contestants on these four seats lost their security deposits.
Chandigarh Parliamentary seat has also gone in favour of BJP. Its candidate Kirron Kher has defeated Congress candidate Pawan Kumar Bansal.
In Haryana, the BJP has registered a major victory by winning all the 10 Lok Sabha seats. Its vote share has gone up to 58.02 percent as against Congress' 28.42 percent. Out of 11 women in the fray out of a total of 223 candidates, only BJP's Sunita Duggal managed to win from Sirsa seat.
In Himachal Pradesh, all contestants other than winning and defeated rivals lost their security deposits in all the four constituencies of Hamirpur, Kangra, Mandi and Shimla. The BJP has won all the 4 seats.
In Rajasthan, the BJP retained 24 seats and its ally RLTP won from Nagaur. The BJP's vote share improved from 55.61 per cent votes in 2014 to 58.47 per cent in 2019. The Congress polled only 34.24 per cent of the votes in the state. About one per cent voters chose NOTA in this election.
In Maharashtra, Out of 48 Lok Sabha seats in the state, BJP gets 23 and its ally Shiv Sena 18. NCP has bagged 4 seats while Congress and All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen get one seat each.
In Goa, both BJP and Congress have bagged one seat each. Union Minister of state Shripad Naik has won North Goa seat, Congress leader Francisco Sardinha gets South Goa seat. In 2014 elections, BJP had won both the seats. Except BJP and the Congress candidates remaining four contenders lost their deposits.
In West Bengal, Out of 42 constituencies, the Trinamool Congress has bagged 22, BJP 18, and Congress 2. 466 candidates were in the fray. Only 87 could save their deposits.
In Bihar, Out of 40 seats, BJP has bagged 17 seats while its ally Janta Dal (United) gets 16 and Lok Janshakti Party got six. Congress could manage only one.
Only 80 out of 626 candidates could save their deposits. In Patna Sahib constituency, Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad secured 61.85 percent votes while Ashok Kumar Yadav also of BJP secured 61 percent votes in Madhubani.
In Jharkhand, Out of 14 seats, BJP has got 11 while AJSU party, Congress and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha gets one each. Of the total 230 candidates, 204 lost their deposits. Top two candidates in most of the constituencies shared more than 85 percent votes.
In Chhattisgarh, out of total 11 Parliamentary seats, BJP has won 9 while Congress bagged the remaining 2. The analysis of votes polled by prominent political parties indicates that BJP has put up a remarkable show with 50.70 per cent votes while Congress has polled 40.91 per cent votes.
BSP has got a share of 2.30 per cent while 4.00 per cent votes have gone to others. This time 1.44 per cent voters have chosen None of the Above (NOTA) option. BJP candidate Vijay Baghel won by a margin of around 3 lakh 92 thousand votes in Durg, highest in the state. The minimum victory margin is in Kanker constituency where Mohan Mandavi of BJP defeated Biresh Thakur of Congress by nearly seven thousand votes.
In Karnataka, BJP secured a landmark victory winning 25 seats out of 28 seats. The Congress, JDS and independent one each. out of 434 candidates ionly 56 could save their deposits. Four BJP candidates secured more than 60 percent of votes. Anant Kumar Hegde got more than 68 percent.
In Telangana, result has been declared for all the 17 seats. TRS has won 9 seats. BJP has won 4 seats. Congress has won 3 seats. AIMIM candidate Asaduddin Owaisi has won from Hyderabad. A record 186 candidates were contesting from Nizamabad constituency as a protest. On the whole, 43 of the total 443 candidates saved their deposits. Top three candidates shared among themselves the 80 percent of the total votes cast.
In Kerala, the Congress led UDF got comfortable victory with Congress winning 15 seats. Congress President Rahul Gandhi has won from Wayanad constituency by securing a margin of over 4 lakhs 31 thousand votes over CPI candidate P.P.Suneer. IUML has won 2 seats. Kerala Congress(M), RSP and CPM have won in one seat each. 52 of the 227 candidates could save their deposit while 175 lost.
In Assam, all the 14 results have been declared. BJP has won nine seats and Congress three. All India United Democratic Front and an Independent have bagged one seat each. In the previous Lok Sabha BJP and Congress had seven members each. For BJP, the vote share has declined marginally from 36.86 percent to 36.05 per cent. Congress vote share has increased to 35.44 per cent from 29.9 per cent in 2014 Lok Sabha elections.
In Arunachal Pradesh, BJP has bagged both Arunachal East and Arunachal west seats. Party candidate and Union Minister Kiren Rijiju defeated Nabam Tuki of Congress by a margin of over 1,74,000 votes. In Arunachal East, BJP candidate Tapir Gao defeated Lowangcha Wanglat by a margin of 69,948 votes.
In Manipur, BJP candidate Dr Rajkumar Ranjan Singh has won from Inner Manipur Lok Sabha seat while Naga People’s Front candidate Lorho S.P foze has won Outer Manipur seat.
In Meghalaya, Congress candidate Vincent H. Pala has won by a margin of 1,52,000 votes. Agatha K. Sangma of National People's Party has defeated Mukul Sangma of Congress by a margin more than 64 thousand votes.
In Mizoram constituency, C Lalrosanga of Mizo National Front has won by a margin of more than 8,000 votes. He defeated Independent candidate Lalnghinglova Hmar.
In Nagaland, the lone Lok Sabha seat has been bagged by Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party candidate Tokheho Yepthomi defeating Congress candidate K L Chishi by more than 16300 votes.
Sikkim Krantikari Morcha candidate, Indra Hang Subba has bagged the lone seat of the state.
In Tripura, BJP has won both the parliamentary seats. State Party General Secretary Pratima Bhoumik has won by more than 3 lakhs 5 thousand votes in Tripura West.
Nationalist Congress Party has retained lone parliamentary seat of Lakshadweep.
Independent candidate Delkar Mohanbhai Sanjibhai has bagged Dadara & Nagar Haveli seat.
Daman & Diu seat has gone in favour of Lalubhai Babubhai Patel of BJP. In Puducherry, Congress candidate V.Vaithilingam has won the lone Lok Sabha seat. 19 candidates were in the fray. Only Congress and AINRC candidates managed to save their deposits.
The position is clear about the formation of the new Assemblies in the four states of Arunachal Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and Sikkim which went to the polls along with the Lok Sabha elections.
In Andhra Pradesh, results have been announced for all the 175 assembly constituencies. YSR congress Party has secured 151 seats followed by Telugu Desam Party with 23 and Janasena one seat. The YSR Congress party which registered a historic win in Andhra Pradesh has considerably improved its votes share in the current assembly elections.
The party secured 49.9 Per cent votes against 30.9 Per cent in 2014 assembly elections. In the current Assembly elections, TDP secured 39.2 Per cent , BJP - 0.84 Per cent , Congress 1.17 Per cent, BSP - 0.28 Per cent , CPI 0.11 Per cent , CPM 0.32 Per cent.
In Odisha Assembly, the ruling BJD has retained power by winning 112 seats in 146 member assembly. BJP has won 23 seats while Congres 9 and CPI(M) and Independent bagged one seat each.
BJP is set to form a new government in Arunachal Pradesh securing 37 seats in the 60-member Assembly. Results have been declared for 58 constituencies and counting for 2 remaining seats is in progress. JD(U) has won 7 seats. Congress and National People's Party won 4 seats each. People's Party of Arunachal got one seat while Independents bagged 2 seats. BJP had won 3 seats uncontested.
In Sikkim, the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha is poised to form the new government. It got the majority in the 32 member house by winning 17 seats. SDF has bagged 15 seats. Chief Minister Pawan Chamling has won both the Assembly seats of Poklok Kamrang and Namchi Singhithang.
SDF President Pawan Chamling has accepted his party defeat and congratulated the winning SKM Party leader Prem Singh Tamang. He thanked the people for showing faith on him for the last 25 years to serve the state. The SKM will hold legislature party meeting tonight to elect its leader.
In Madhya Pradesh Assembly by-poll, for Chindwara seat, Chief Minister and Congress candidate Kamal Nath defeated his nearest rival Vivek Sahu of BJP by a margin of over 25 thousand eight hundred votes. (AIR NEWS)
