3 relay teams comprising 15 swimmers achieve a record by swimming 29 kilometres across Palk Strait

Three relay teams comprising of 15 swimmers have achieved a record by swimming 29 kilometres across the Palk Strait. This has been the biggest number of swimmers for having achieved the feat. 

The teams Started from Talaimannar and finished at Dhanushkodi. Of the three teams, Swim Life Albatross team recorded a time of 11 hours 17 minutes, while Swim Life Orcas team recorded 11 hours 25 minutes and Swimlife Seagulls recorded 11 hrs 32 mins. The first recorded swimming across the Palk Strait was by Murugupillai Navratnaswami from Sri Lanka in 1954 and by first Indian, Mihir Sen in 1966.

Thereafter, over next 65 years only 12 swimmers swam across the Palk Strait. However, with the proactive interest of the Mission over the past three years, 41 swimmers have completed this challenging feat. Previously two teams comprising 7 swimmers in total had completed the swim across the Palk Strait last month. (AIR NEWS)
