Charanjit Singh Channi has been unanimously elected as leader of the Congress Legislature Party of Punjab, who would be state's next Chief Minister.
The announcement of the name was made by Senior Congress leader and Incharge of Punjab Party Affairs Harish Rawat on social media platform twitter.
The decision was taken in a high level meeting at New Delhi convened by Congress National President Sonia Gandhi at her residence.
Mr Channi was one of the Ministers who rebelled against Captain Amarinder Singh.
He is MLA from the Chamkaur Sahib Assembly constituency. He was leader of Opposition in Punjab Assembly from 2015 to 2016.
AIR correspondent reports that Punjab CM-designate Charanjit Singh Channi accompanied by Harish Rawat and State Congress President Navjot Sidhu met Governor Banwari Lal Purohit this evening.
After coming out from the Governor house in Chandigarh, Mr Channi said, he has informed the Governor about the outcome of meeting of Punjab Congress Legislature Party at Chandigarh and staked the claim to form the government.
He said, oath taking ceremony will take place tomorrow.
This came after Captain Amarinder Singh resigned as Chief Minister of Punjab yesterday, saying he felt humiliated at the way the party handled the infighting in the state unit.
Assembly elections in Punjab are due to be held early next year. The current term of the state Assembly ends on March 27. (AIR NEWS)
