Death toll crosses 30,000 across Turkey and Syria following past week's earthquake

The death toll across Turkey and Syria following the past week's earthquake has crossed 30,000. Turkish Vice President Fuat Oktay told the local media that Turkey's death toll climbed to 24,617. On the other hand in Syria, according to the White Helmets civil defence group, the confirmed deaths reached 3,575, including 2,167 in rebel-held areas in the northwest. According to Syrian state media citing health ministry's data, an additional 1,408 deaths have been recorded in government-controlled territories.

The Turkish government has added that nearly 6,000 buildings, including public hospitals, collapsed in seven cities. An Indian national missing since the earthquake in Turkey was found dead under the debris of a hotel in Malatya, informed the Indian Embassy in Turkey. United Nations expects the figures to touch 50,000.

Rescue efforts have been upped as the World Health Organization chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned that time is running out for the injured and those still trapped. Rescue teams have deployed sniffer dogs to detect signs of human life under rubble in Gaziantep of Turkey as well. A father and daughter, a toddler and a 10-year-old girl are among the recent survivors pulled out from the ruins of collapsed buildings in the southern Turkish province of Hatay on Sunday afternoon.

A team of 96 Indian Army personnel has been stationed at the 60 Para Field Hospital in Hatay's Iskenderun to provide medical assistance. Nearly 800 people have been treated so far and 10 major surgeries have already been performed at the hospital. People have lauded the efforts of the Indian Army. (AIR NEWS)
