Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment Thawarchand Gehlot today said, the government has taken several steps to ensure de-addiction from drugs in the country.

Replying to a calling attention motion in the Rajya Sabha on the situation arising out of the reports of increasing drug addiction among school children in various parts of the country, Mr Gehlot said, in the last five years, the government has increased the budget towards de-addiction for 35 crore rupees in 2014 to 135 crore rupees at present.

He said, money from allocated budget is given to States and NGOs working for de-addiction of drug. He said, the government has undertakan a national survey to find out the number of people who are drug addicts so that a strategy could be chalked out for de-addiction.

Mr Gehlot also said, his Ministry has prepared a National Action Plan for Drug Demand Reduction for the period 2018-2025. It aims at reduction of adverse consequences of drug abuse through a multi pronged strategy involving education, de- addiction and rehabilitation of affected individuals. BJP MP R K Sinha had moved the calling attention motion in the House. (AIR NEWS)
