The United Kingdom Government today said that three Iranian ships attempted to impede the passage of a British oil tanker in Strait of Hormuz, forcing a United Kingdom frigate to intervene.
A statement by UK Government said that UK frigate HMS Montrose issued verbal warnings to the Iranian vessels, which then turned away. The statement said that the incident was contrary to international law.
It said that UK is concerned by this action of Iran and continue to urge the Iranian authorities to de-escalate the situation in the region. However, Iran's Revolutionary Guards has denied that they had impeded a British oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz.
There has been no confrontation in the last 24 hours with any foreign vessels, including British ones. Today's incident follows the detention of an Iranian oil tanker by Britain on 4th July off the coast of Gibraltar, a tiny British overseas territory on Spain's southern tip which followed a sharp condemnantion and warning by Iran.
