As people in other parts of the country facing difficulties due to the prevailing heat wave, most of the places in Kargil district have experienced Heavy rainfall and snowfall in the last 48 hours.
This sudden snowfall of almost 6 inches to one foot in Dras, the second coldest inhabited place in the World. Temperatures in Suru valley dropped to sub-zero levels. The snowfall has caused heavy loss to the farmers and the standing crops were destroyed.
The Shakar Chiktan and Wakha area in Kargil also reported floods at various locations.
The government announced the closure of schools and postponed the scheduled General Meeting of the Local Body, LAHDC Kargil. Strategic NH 1D was closed for a while due to landslides at various locations near Zojjila.
