The 20-year-old athlete from Hyderabad initially occupied the fifth position on the leaderboard with 4,824 points after the sixth round. Nandini expressed her joy and pride at winning a medal for her country, describing it as a moment she had worked tirelessly for. Nandini is pursuing her second year of BBA at Telangana Social Welfare Residential Degree College for Women in Sangareddy. Dr. E. Naveen Nicolas, Secretary of the Telangana Social Welfare Residential Educational Institutions Society, hailed Nandini’s victory as an inspiration for their students. He praised her as a talented athlete who has proven herself by securing a bronze medal in her first Asian Games appearance, and he wished her success in her future endeavors.
However, there was controversy within the Indian squad in the early hours of Monday when Swapna Barman, who finished just behind Nandini in the heptathlon with a total of 5,708 points, alleged that she lost a medal to a transgender woman at the Asian Games. She posted on her social media platform, formerly known as Twitter, expressing her desire to have her award reinstated, citing concerns about the athletic rules. She later deleted the post. K. Sarangapani, Secretary of the Telangana Athletics Association, condemned such allegations and emphasized that they should not be entertained, as they go against the spirit of sportsmanship. He suggested that these accusations may have arisen out of jealousy and warned against making derogatory statements that could harm the integrity of the athletic community.
