US President Donald Trump says he has not agreed to roll back tariffs on Chinese imports. Trump's announcement, at the White House media briefing last night, comes as a dampener on recent optimism for a major de-escalation in the US-China trade war. Trump's remarks appeared to push back against Beijing's claims that the two sides had agreed to remove tariffs in stages as part of a partial deal announced last month.
The United States and China have imposed steep tariffs on hundreds of billions of dollars in two-way trade. Another round of US duties is set to hit on the 15th of next month on 160 billion US Dollars in Chinese goods.
Trump also said that Beijing is eager for a deal because their economy is hurting. Observers, however, say that China has more leverage as the US President prepares to compete for re-election. (AIR)
