Why was the midnight of 15th August 1947 chosen as the date & time for Indian Independence?
In February 1947, Lord Mountbatten was appointed the last viceroy of India and it was he who had personally decided the date August 15th as he considered it to be very lucky for his career.
WHY MIDNIGHT?
When the date of independence was decided in “June 3 plan” and announced to public, there was indignation among astrologers across the country because according to the astrologers, 15th Aug 1947 was an “unfortunate & unholy” date. Many alternative dates were suggested but Lord Mountbatten was adamant on Aug 15 (since it was his lucky date). As a workaround, the astrologers suggested the midnight hour between Aug 14 and 15 due to the simple reason that the day according to English starts at 12 AM, but according to Hindu calendar, starts at sunrise.

The astrologers had insisted that the speech of acknowledgement of transfer of power should be done within the 48 minute window (referred to as “Abhijeet Muhurta”) which lasted between 24 minutes before and after 12:15 am i.e. between 11:51 pm & 12:39 am. Jawahar Lal Nehru had to deliver a speech only within that time slot and an additional restriction was that the speech had to end by 12 am, so that the holy conch (Shanka) be blown to indicate the birth of a new nation at the stroke of midnight hour and the rest is history.
IS “JANA GANA MANA” REALLY SUPPOSED TO BE OUR NATIONAL ANTHEM?
Source
It is said that “JANA GANA MANA” written by Rabindra Nath Tagore was penned down to pay homage to King George V.
He sang the song on December 27th, 1911 at Calcutta on the day of the Indian National Congress convention that was also attended by the King.
King George V
WHAT DOES JANA GANA MANA ACTUALLY MEAN?
Jana Gana Mana ADHINAYAKA jaye he: “adhinayaka” (super hero) of “Jana Gana Mana” (in the minds of the people)?
Bharat Bhaagya VIDHATA: “Bhaagya Vidhata” (Lord Of Destiny)?
Gaye TAVA jaye Gaatha: “Tava” (your) “Jaye Gaatha” (story of victory) we all sing?
Jana Gana Mana was originally written by Rabindra Nath Tagore to praise and welcome King George V. The “Adhinayak”, our “Bhaagya Vidhata” is King George V and it is the King of England’s “Jaya Gaatha” that we sing every morning in our school.
WHY WAS JANA GANA MANA CHOSEN AS OUR NATIONAL ANTHEM?
Jawahar Lal Nehru chose the present National Anthem as he felt that it would be easier for the band to play Jana Gana Mana than Vande Mataram.
WAS NEHRU SUPPOSED TO BE OUR FIRST PRIME MINISTER?
Yes, Sardar Vallabhai Patel was to be our first prime minister and not Nehru. The prime ministry elections was won fair and square by Sardar Vallabhai Patel but since Nehru didn’t want to play second in command to anyone and also that Gandhi Ji had a soft spot for Nehru, Sardar Patel had to withdraw.

FACTS ABOUT OUR INDIAN NATIONAL FLAG
Source
Our National Flag was first hoisted on 7th August, 1906 at Parseen Bagan Square in Calcutta. The flag was composed of horizontal strips of green, yellow and red. The red strip composed of 8 white lotuses embossed on it in a row. The green strip had a white sun on the left and white crescent and star on the right.
The current flag has 3 colours; saffron, white and green. Saffron stands for courage and sacrifice; white stands for peace, truth and prosperity and green stands for faith, fertility and chivalry. The Ashok Chandra at the centre of the flag stands for Righteousness.

It is said that the first version of the current flag was made by Pingali Venkayya at the Bezwada in 1921. It was made up of 2 colours; red and green, representing the two major communities. Gandhi ji was the one who suggested the addition of the white strip into the flag representing the various communities of India and the spinning wheel to represent progress.
DURING INDEPENDENCE WHEN AND WHERE WAS OUR FLAG HOISTED?
Mountbatten chose the day since Aug 15 as it commemorated the second anniversary of Japan’s surrender to allied forces. North Korea, South Korea, Bahrain and Republic of Congo share their Independence Day with India.
Every year the Independence Day celebration is carried out at Red Fort, Delhi as a tradition that is believed to be followed since 15th August 1947. However, a research paper published by the Lok Sabha secretariat stated that the PM Nehru unfurled the Indian Flag and spoke from the Red Fort on August 16th 1947 and NOT 15th August 1947.

Happy Independence Day 2017
