Sensex hits 40,000 mark; Nifty crosses 12,000

Mumbai: The Sensex hit the 40,000 mark for the first time ever in morning trade today, while the Nifty breached the 12,000 level as early trends showed a huge majority for the ruling NDA.

The Sensex at the Bombay Stock Exchange zoomed over 900 points to hit an intra-day high of 40,012. The Nifty at the National Stock Exchange spurted 265 points to touch a record 12,003.

At the foreign exchange market, the rupee appreciated 14 paise to 69 rupees 51 paise against the dollar. (AIR NEWS)
