news

In Sri Lanka, country’s police chief and defence secretary have been asked to resign as police continues with its crackdown on terrorist groups linked to Sunday’s attacks which claimed 359 lives including 39 foreigners.

In his address to the nation last night, President Maithripala Sirisena had said that he will make immediate changes in the high-security positions as there was negligence in carrying out responsibilities.

Security forces continue with their surveillance of suspects behind the attacks and more than 60 people have been arrested in this regard.

Meanwhile, tensions ran high in Colombo and other parts of the country with reports of couple of explosions in the city. Police confirmed that there were suspicious materials found and controlled explosions were carried out.

Addressing media on Wednesday, State Defence Minister Ruwan Wijewardena said, investigations so far revealed that the attackers were motivated by Christchurch shootings though no direct links have been established.

Mr. Wijewardena disclosed that some of the attackers were from well to do families and one of them even studied in Britain.
