News

Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar has said the Supreme Court’s 2015 judgment striking down the National Judicial Appointments Commission (NJAC) Act was a severe compromise of Parliamentary sovereignty and disregard of the mandate of the people. Mr Dhankhar cited the NJAC as an example of how the ability of the executive, judiciary and legislature to work within their domains is critical to a democracy. He said, democracy blossoms and flourishes when its three facets - Legislature, Judiciary and Executive - scrupulously adhere to their respective domains. Mr Dhankhar said, any incursion by one, howsoever subtle, in the domain of other, has the potential to upset the governance apple cart. Mr Dhankhar was addressing the parliament after assuming the position of the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha as the winter session commenced yesterday.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed confidence that the Rajya Sabha will attain a new height under the leadership of new Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar. Welcoming him on the first day of the Winter Session in the Rajya Sabha, the Prime Minister congratulated Mr. Dhankhar for assuming the Chair. Mr. Modi said, Mr. Dhankhar’s life is an inspiration for all. He said, the Vice President belongs to a farmer family and studied at a Sainik school. He said, qualities of what he called Kishan and Jawan are inbuilt in Mr. Dhankhar. Mr. Modi said, the Rajya Sabha is the biggest strength of the country as many of the country's Prime Ministers have worked as members of this house. He described the Vice President as Kishan Putra saying that he has great knowledge of legal matters. Mr Modi said, just a few days back, the world has entrusted India with the responsibility of hosting the G-20 group and also, this is the beginning of ‘Amrit Kaal’. He mentioned, this ‘Amrit Kaal’ will not only be the period for building a new developed India, but India will also play a very important role in deciding the future direction of the world during this period.
